So that was Earth Day. Now what?

So it was Earth Day on April 22nd and it seemed everywhere had some kind of “green” theme.  Most of the major TV networks turned their logos green or had eco-friendly programming for the week, and some sites dedicated their home pages to green issues, such as our client USTelecom. But as we look forward to next year you may be asking yourself “what can I do in the meantime”?

Well, a fair bit if you spend some time online.

First things first, go and join Edenbee.  This is a social network about lowering your carbon footprint and combating climate change.  You can check out my Edenbee profile and join to get tips on everything from hybrids to recycling.

Flock is my favorite browser, but they now have an eco-edition browser, which will donate 10% of its search proceeds to a green  charity of choice, as voted by the users at the end of the year.

You could also keep in touch with all things environmental at Treehugger - a site dedicated to green issues.

If you are looking at a new hosting partner in 2008 you could search out one of the many “green” hosting companies such as GoGreenHosting.

Netscape users can "Flock" to a new browser...

As seen on the official Netscape blog - Netscape 8 users can migrate to the new Flock browser.  As development and support ended for Netscape browsers on March 1st, users will be presented with a chance to move over to Flock with an update to be released soon. Now I'm a big fan of Flock (I'm using it to write & post this) but I wonder why they didn't go with Firefox given the history.  Or maybe that's the reason.

Flock1.1 beta

Some of the things I'm loving about the new Flock 1.1 beta:

  • Flock Blog Plus add-on is now workable again (belated congrats to mctones on his new arrival)
  • Integrated Gmail & Yahoo! mail
  • Cleaner "My World" page - I never used this before but might give it a go
  • Seems a lot faster on start-up

The social browser becomes truly social...

So I'm a big fan of Flock, the social browser.  It gives me a great way to write posts to multiple blogs, keep track of my photos on Flickr and videos on YouTube.

People sidebarNow, with the upcoming 1.0 release, Flock becomes truly social with the addition of a "people" sidebar.

As with most social sites you may visit, Flock will detect it and ask if you want to include it in the browser.  With this release it extends this to sites such as Facebook and Twitter as well as being able to pull your contacts in from existing sites like YouTube and Flickr.

It will alert you when you have new messages on these services and lets you send messages to others.  It can also let you drag a piece of media (say a photo you uploaded to Flickr) from your media bar and drop it on any contact - this will launch the messaging function for that person (say Facebook if that's where you know them from) and let you hit send.

You can see this in action, demonstrated by Shawn Hardin (CEO) when he presented at TechCrunch40.

I'm still kicking the tires on this, and as it's a beta some of my add-ons aren't working, but I feel this is really a great step forward for the browser.

Flock 0.9 released and a new way to listen to radio...

Flock 0.9 launched this week, coming out of testing, and the Flock website has got an overhaul (to mixed reviews) as well.  Even after testing ended, Flock is still my default browser at work.  A couple of things were still missing from this release for me as I've upped my blogging, but I found an add-on that seems to be filling the gap.

Blog+ is an add-on from mctones and has a plethora of goodies for the blogger, including:

  • XFN on links
  • a microformats hCalendar
  • tagging alternatives including Technorati
  • ability to have the Flock blogging window in a lower pane
Something else I came across, thanks to Warren Ellis, was TUN3R.com.  This online worldwide radio organizer lets you skim through stations, much like finding those crazy Euro stations at the end of the dial when I was younger, or search for artists or genres.  The stations sound better in iTunes than streaming through the browser and TUN3R lets you open one you've found in a lot of different players with one click.

Flock 0.9 - WOW!

This is my first post using the beta version of Flock 0.9 that I'm currently testing.  Though this is still an early beta and has (we've been asked to stress this) bugs to be fixed I am impressed with the leaps they've made. flock09-screenshot-2007-06-08.png More to come as I kick the tires but it really is shaping up to be the social browser I hoped it would be.
